10 aanbevelingen voor internal auditing in de financiële crisis

Voorzitter Richard Chambers van het internationale Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) heeft tien aanbevelingen die internal auditors kunnen helpen hun organisaties door de financiële crisis te loodsen.

Organisaties reageren op uiteenlopende manieren op de huidige crisis, stelt Chambers in Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Journal. Gemeenschappelijke noemer daarbij is het flexibiliseren van de internal audit-activiteiten. Door het auditplan af te stemmen op de business strategie en actuele risico's, verschuift de focus van internal auditors van het financiële en compliance-terrein naar de operationele kant en organisatiebreed risk management (ERM).

Tegen deze achtergrond komt de IIA-voorzitter tot tien aanbevelingen voor internal auditors. Kort samengevat:

1. Focus on recession-related risks and activities.

2. Increase communication with management and the audit committee.

3. Place renewed focus on risk management and corporate governance processes.

4. Strengthen your risk assessment process. Reassess risks, including emerging external risks, and quantify the impact more frequently.

5. Operate with a more flexible and adaptable audit plan.

6. Serve as a risk management educator. Help management and the audit committee understand where they stand in the ERM curve and work together to fill in the gaps.

7. Expand fraud testing in the audit plan.

8. Strengthen business knowledge. Couple audit methodology with a deep understanding of the business; find out what you don't know and fill in the gaps.

9. Strengthen your relationships and communications with the organization's other governance, risk and control functions.

10. Enhance the efficiency of your audit processes.
