Auditcommissies onderschatten compliance-risico's die voortvloeien uit politieke besluitvorming. Ze hebben te weinig besef wat het effect is van bijvoorbeeld belastingwetgeving en mededingingsrecht op bedrijfsrisico's. Vooral auditcommissies van internationaal opererende bedrijven bereiden zich slecht voor.

Dit blijkt uit een onderzoek van Ernst & Young, het Insights for European Audit Committees report. Zo zijn er nog maar weinig auditcommissies die de gevolgen van de G-20-besluiten van afgelopen najaar op hun agenda's hebben geplaatst. Op de top van de G-20 zijn afspraken gemaakt over bijvoorbeeld belastingwetgeving, mededingingsrecht en fraude.

"At a macro level, the G-20 has initiated wholesale changes to a broad range of policy areas, not just the financial system", aldus Pascal Macioce, assurance leader van Ernst & Young. "Which means that there are many changes to the ways that companies do business not only within their countries, but also increasingly important across borders."

"Audit committees must think more broadly about the way that government interventions - both nationally and at G20 level - has significantly increased existing compliance risks. These risks will continue to increase until such time that new regulations bed down on both a national and global level."

Volgens het rapport doen bedrijven er goed aan om nauwere contacten aan te gaan met lokale belastingdiensten, toezichthouders en standard setters, om zo plaatselijke veranderingen in wet- en regelgeving tijdig te signaleren. Ook moeten ze beter letten op afkondigingen van de Europese Commissie.
